Learn about Choosing the Right Window for You

Choosing the right type of window for your home can seem a little daunting, especially if you’ve had no previous experience in purchasing windows before. There are a multitude of different factors that need to be considered when it comes to choosing the perfect window. These factors range from aesthetic appeal and frame colour, to energy efficiency, durability, installation, glazing and more.

Here at DIY Megastore, we stock an extensive range of window types, styles, colours, and sizes, designed to accommodate a variety of properties and budgets. To help you narrow down your search and find the most suitable window choice for your home, we’ve created a practical summary of elements to consider.

Choosing a Window Type & Placement

Make sure to choose a window that not only suits the aesthetic of your property, but also serves and enhances the functions of the living space within. Discover a wide range of traditional and modern casement windows in a variety of single and double size ranges to fit virtually any wall in the home. Think about how you want your windows to open as well as where you want them positioned in your space. Consider at which points and angles the sunlight naturally enters the home in order to optimise this with your window placement.

Thanks to intelligent modern design and smart manufacturing, windows have moved far past just the standard wall fitting. If wall space is limited but you still want a way to let in the natural sunlight, our expanse of roof installable windows are a brilliantly practical alternative. Choose from roof windows, skylights, roof lanterns and sun tunnels to add new height to your living space, whilst improving both the insulation and ventilation of your property.

Window Glazing

Window glazing is the glass that sits inside the window frame. Most modern properties are typically fitted with double or triple-glazed windows in order to improve energy efficiency and provide enhanced thermal insulation. As windows can contribute up to 25% of your home’s average heat loss, it's important to consider the kind of window glazing you pick.

A double-glazed window incorporates two sheets of glass instead of one. There is a space between the two glass layers, usually filled with a mix of trapped air and argon gas. This is what helps to reduce heat loss and improve acoustic insulation.

Installing high-quality double-glazed windows will not only help to enhance the efficiency of your living space, but can also reduce sound transmission from traffic, loud neighbours, and other external sounds for a far quieter home.

Window Energy Ratings

When purchased from a reputable and trusted supplier such as DIY Megastore, you will find that the window glazing is rated using the industry standard Window Energy Rating or WER scale. This rating system ranks windows as part of an alphabetic scale based on their level of energy efficiency and thermal performance.

Highly energy-efficient windows will be placed at the top of the scale at A+, with the lowest performing and least efficient rated G.

Make sure to choose a window with a high WER rating to ensure optimum efficiency and insulative performance levels.

Colour & Design

As well as providing good levels of performance and functionality, you’ll also want your new windows to look the part too. Easy to coordinate with its clean, contemporary appearance, white is a popular frame finish spotted on many homes across the country. However, if you are looking to add a little extra personality to your home, there are also a range of other stunning colours and finishes to choose from to perfectly match your aesthetic.

Think about the style of your property. Classic Victorian-style homes can be stylishly upgraded whilst still maintaining a timeless appeal using lighter, neutral colours. For something a little different black and dark grey frames look absolutely stunning on modern properties, especially when paired with matching doors.

You may also want to consider the external colour scheme of neighbouring properties when choosing your frame finish. It's great to inject a touch of your own personal taste into your home, but maybe also think about how various colours would work in coordination with the rest of the properties on your street too. This extra consideration may also help you out if you decide to sell your property down the line.
