Choose Bathroom Furniture

Browsing and choosing furniture can be one of the best parts of building or refurbishing a bathroom, especially if it’s a new home. It’s the stage when you finally get to see all of your hard work come together. All the more important then, that you are fully aware of all the different types of furniture, styles and materials available to you.

Think of this brief guide as the starting line, providing you with a few things to consider that can greatly help in your search for the bathroom furniture that is best for you and your project. For more direct advice, get in touch with our award-winning customer service team.

How Much Space Do You Have to Work With?

Fundamentally your furniture (beyond just looking good) should also complement the space that it is in. This means making the most of the room available to ensure that you have ample space to move around and can easily reach all of the appliances.

You will need to also make sure that the appliances can reach any utilities (water and power mains etc.). Furniture is as much about function as it is about form. Ideally, the placement should create a sort of ‘walkway’ that allows for simple navigation throughout the room.

To that end, it is always worth drawing up a simple layout if only to give you an idea of what sizes wouldn’t be suitable. You obviously don’t want furniture that is too big for the bathroom but equally you don’t want it so small that it creates a lot of ‘dead’ space.

When browsing remember to consider the door openings for your cabinets, more specifically how much they will protrude into the room. Again, you want to make sure that you have space to move around without having to risk hitting your shins on open cabinet doors.

Do You Have a Colour Scheme in Mind?

Depending on what stage of your bathroom you are at you may or may not have your colour scheme planned out already. If you have it is simply a matter of finding furniture that compliments it. Un-obtrusive greys or off whites are best for minimalist designs or if you're going for a more relaxing vibe perhaps darker colours. Whatever the case it’s important that the furniture matches with the rest of the bathroom.

If you haven’t decided on a colour scheme, now would be a good time to do so. There are a lot of places you can search for inspiration, even just a cursory Google will give you a pretty good idea of some popular themes. A safe bet would be to go for simple off whites as these can suit a lot of modern styles and designs.

What Style is Your Bathroom?

Most bathroom designs can fall into one of two broad categories: Traditional and Modern and furniture is no different.

Traditional Furniture typically will come in classic styles, with more detailing to suit period or ‘modern retro’ themes. Modern Furniture is a bit sleeker, with simple designs and clean, neat edges. As trends change so does furniture so it is also worth spending the time to browse around to make sure that you can find a style that best suits what you are looking for.

What Type of Furniture is Best for Your Bathroom?

We offer four distinct types of furniture for your bathroom that can provide different kinds of storage solutions depending on your answers to the above questions as well as what type of bathroom you are working on. Namely a family bathroom, a cloakroom or an en-suite.

Vanity Units

In simple terms, a bathroom vanity unit is a piece of furniture with a basin incorporated into the top. The main advantage of this is how much space it can save as opposed to separate basins and cupboards. This makes the great for En-suites, where space is normally at a premium. This sleek design also lends itself very well to modern or contemporary bathrooms and is ideal when you need to store away miscellaneous items.

Storage Units

From creams and gels to razors and other health products, there can be quite a number of things in your bathroom that will need to be neatly stored away. Bathroom storage units perform this job perfectly and with the option of having them fixed directly to the wall they won’t take up too much space themselves.

Free Standing Units

Much like Storage Units in purpose, free-standing units tend to offer a bit more versatility at the cost of taking up more space. Typically, you have options that include floor-standing cabinets and tall-standing cabinets depending on how much you have to store.

A big benefit of going for freestanding units is that they are far easier to keep clean as you can easily move them around to get underneath and behind them. Of course, due to their increased size, you’ll find that they are most suited for larger family bathrooms.

Mirror Units

Every bathroom will need a mirror and storage space of some kind. Bathroom mirror units combine these two needs into one simple and elegant product. These are available in a variety of different sizes and provide a phenomenal level of value whilst taking up virtually no space.
