Whilst similar to shears, loppers have a far more specialised design. They are much longer and, in some cases, very thin to conserve weight. This makes them the ideal tool for cutting small twigs and branches normally too high to reach. If you are working on trimming an overgrown tree then, they play a vital role.

Types of Loppers

There are two types of loppers and these are:

  • Bypass Loppers: These have two sharp blades that pass by each other, similar to scissors. They are suitable for cutting live branches and provide clean cuts.
  • Anvil Loppers: Anvil loppers have one sharp blade that cuts against a flat anvil, which can crush branches and is better suited for dead or dry wood.

Considerations For Choosing The Right Lopper

When choosing loppers, which are long-handled cutting tools designed for pruning and cutting branches and thicker vegetation, there are several important considerations to keep in mind to ensure you select the right tool for your needs. Here are some key factors to consider:

  • Cutting Capacity: Consider the thickness of branches you plan to cut. Loppers are available in various sizes, and the cutting capacity can range from a few inches to over two inches. Choose loppers with a cutting capacity that matches your needs.
  • Blade Material: Look for loppers with high-quality, durable blade materials. Hardened steel blades are common and provide good cutting performance. Consider options with non-stick coatings to reduce friction and prevent sap buildup.
  • Handle Material: Lopper handles are typically made of wood, fibreglass, or aluminium. Wooden handles are comfortable to grip but may be heavier. Fibreglass and aluminium handles are lightweight and often more durable.
  • Handle Length: Longer handles provide greater leverage, allowing you to cut thicker branches with less effort. However, they can be more challenging to manoeuvre in tight spaces. Choose handle length based on your specific pruning needs and comfort.

Like our wide range of garden tools, our loppers have been manufactured by leading specialist brands. Made from only high-quality materials with comfortable handles to optimise user performance. To make your pruning even easier, we also offer some extending models which retract down to a manageable size for hassle-free storage.
