Tackling any DIY project can be daunting whether it’s big or small. That’s why it is so important to have the right equipment from the start. But how is this best done, especially if you’re conscious of your time and budget?  

Believe it or not, the vast majority of DIY projects can be relatively quick and hassle-free. And while this certainly isn’t a universal rule that applies to all jobs, with the right preparation you can complete most within the space of a day or two.  

Having the right kit from the get-go, then, can be the difference between a job taking a couple of days and a couple of hours. Below we’ve listed some considerations for you to keep in mind when preparing the equipment for your next project. 

Every piece of equipment takes up space, and those with less room to store them are going to be especially aware of this. That is why, in many cases, quality over quantity is essential when it comes to building out your collection. There are several different ways you can minimise the number of items you need while maximising the results those products provide. 

If you’re challenged for space, consider avoiding larger equipment in favour of more traditional alternatives. You may well find that a decently sized stepladder is more than worth the area it takes up, but is investing in a larger extendable model necessary? You can achieve similar results with smaller models, which can often prove easier to use and – perhaps most importantly – safer. 

Whatever equipment you do end up buying, be sure to have storage space ready for its arrival. Sheds, utility rooms and cupboards under stairways are all popular places to store DIY equipment, with workwear often kept with clothes if easily cleaned and out with your equipment if it is especially hardwearing. If you keep equipment inside, be sure to clean them well before storing it. 

What pieces of equipment do which tasks? And how are said products operated? Do you need accessories to use alongside such equipment? These are all questions that need to be asked when making purchases, and they can all be answered by doing your research into the products you’re looking to buy.  

Product descriptions are a great place to start, with user manuals more often than not supplied alongside them. This gives you a greater idea of the product’s requirements and capabilities. You can also usually access technical specifications from an item’s product page. 

If you’re striving to amass an equipment collection with a limited budget, consider what you’re looking to get out of your kit. If you’re looking for a workbench with excellent levels of durability and longevity, a cheaper model probably won’t live up to your expectations. When it comes to DIY equipment, it is usually the case that less expensive products are designed for smaller projects and fewer uses. 

Keeping your equipment in good condition is a must. No matter what tool you purchase, you’ll need to perform maintenance every so often. This can be as simple as charging a battery pack, to more complex tasks such as component replacement, oiling, and repairing breakages. When browsing, it is best to bear this in mind as long-term maintenance can involve an additional cost.
