Picking the Perfect Gate Style

With a stylish range of gate styles to choose from, you’ll need to consider a few different factors to narrow down the search.

Firstly, think about the intended purpose of your gate. For example, although a low-height picket fence gate will add a degree of security to your property, it will be mainly installed for its visual design and aesthetic purposes instead. A taller and sturdier timber slatted gate paired with a robust bolt system would offer far superior protection for your garden whilst ensuring optimum privacy for your property’s grounds.

Next, consider the existing fencing you have in place. Most homeowners want to coordinate the style, material, and colour of their new garden gate with the fencing already installed. However, adding a decorative or trellis gate could be a fantastic way of breaking up a panelled fence pattern and creating a more unique finish for your garden.

Sizing is the next key factor to evaluate. It is vitally important that your gate fits well not only to create a clean look but also to prevent the possibility of any security issues. The gates we stock are available in a variety of standard dimensions to accommodate a multitude of sizes. Make sure to measure your gate space carefully and pick the perfect height and width to match.

Wood or Metal?

Although wooden gates are the most traditional option for your garden, many homeowners also love the rustic and elegant finish that metal gate designs can create. Within our gate range, we stock both metal and wood materials – so which is better suited to your garden?

Wood

Wooden gates have the timeless ability to bring warm natural charm and character to your garden. There are a variety of different timber options to choose from with a whole host of styles and finishes that blend beautifully with both your fencing and the surrounding garden environment.

Solid panel wooden gates are perfect for ensuring optimum security and privacy for your garden. The wood itself is generally a very robust material with excellent weather resistance when maintained correctly.

Metal

A popular choice for front gardens and walled outdoor spaces, metal gates add a distinctly unique and elegantly classic feel to your property. Although mainly utilised for decorative purposes; certain taller designs will offer a degree of protection thanks to the highly robust nature of the metal material.

With only very minimal regular upkeep required, metal gates are a practical option for those who’d prefer a lower-maintenance alternative to wood. They are incredibly stylish to look at and blend perfectly with both contemporary and traditional property styles alike.

Installation & Gate Furniture

Gate Posts

Gate posts are an essential element of gate installation. The post required for your garden gate will depend on the fitting location, the style of gate you’ve chosen as well as its dimensions and overall weight. A heavier gate will need a heavier-duty gate post to provide complete support so make sure to accommodate this when ordering.

Gate Fixings

To ensure a secure and reliable fit, make sure you’ve purchased the appropriate fixings for your garden gate installation. Metal fixings should be galvanised, and powder coated to prevent rusting and corrosion.

Locks, Latches & Bolts

Fitting a latch will help you keep your gate securely shut whilst still allowing practical accessibility when needed. Within our gate furniture range, we stock a vast selection of easily-installable latch designs to create the perfect stylish finish for your gate.

For optimum security, you may also consider investing in a robust locking system, padlock, or sturdy bolt.

Maintenance & Upkeep

Depending on the material you go for, the level of maintenance needed for your gate will differ.

We stock pre-treated wooden gates which provide excellent resistance against the effects of external weathering. However, to fully protect against rot and decay, you will need to re-treat every few years with appropriate treatment, stain, varnish etc.

Metal gates require a little less upkeep and will last longer without regular maintenance. That being said, it is likely that you will need to cover up chips, scratches, and marks over the years with specialist metal paints and water-resistance treatments to minimise the risk of rusting.
