How Does a Waste Pipe Work?

A waste pipe is designed to carry waste water away from your kitchen and bathroom appliances, through the soil pipe and then into the drainage system. Waste pipes are generally smaller in diameter than soil pipes and don’t require venting as wastewater typically doesn’t generate harmful gases.

Within our range, we stock waste pipes suitable for installation on sinks, toilets and washing machines.

What are the Different Types are Waste Pipe?

There are a few different waste pipe systems available, each manufactured differently with varying fitting methods.

Push-fit pipes can be installed by simply cutting, cleaning, and then pushing into the joint. They require no use of any glue or sealants as all joints are sealed with a small rubber ring within the fitting.

When fitting a solvent weld waste pipe, solvent cement is instead used to create the joint. The solvent cement is brushed into the inside and outside of the pipe fitting, and then pushed together and twisted to fix. A permanent joint is created as the cement secures the pipe and fits together in place.

Compression fittings can be used to connect solvent-weld waste pipes to push-fit waste pipes. As this type of waste fitting utilises a tapered washer, it can be used on either of the pipes even if there is a small difference in the outside diameter of the two.

Push Fit or Solvent Weld?

Although similar in purpose, push-fit and solvent-weld waste pipes do offer a few differences that may affect which one you choose for your installation.

Many DIYers find that push-fit pipes are faster, easier, and cheaper to install as no additional glues or sealants are needed. However, the use of the solvent cement does create a fully permeant join which can offer enhanced resilience when installed in areas with potential impact such as an external wall.

In terms of visual finish, solvent weld fittings do tend to look a little more slimline than push-fit pipes. Push-fit and solvent weld waste pipes are also often manufactured from slightly different materials, although both do offer robust durability for your system.

Are Waste Pipes Available in Different Colours?

Yes! Both push-fit and solvent weld waste pipes are available in a variety of neutral colours including black, white, and grey to coordinate neatly with your appliance and connecting pipework. The colour you choose makes no real difference to the purpose or functionality of the system, it's just down to personal preference.
