If you’ve got your eyes set on one particular material, simply browse the gorgeous collection available and pick out your dream tile. For those still searching for ideas, take a read through the handy guidance section below to spark some inspiration.

Where Do You Plan to Lay Your Tiles?

A very important factor to consider when purchasing outdoor tiles is where exactly you plan on laying them. Every tile is different, and each offers varying levels of durability, strength, resistance etc. There are a wide variety of uses for outdoor tiles, both for aesthetic and practical purposes.

Tiles aren’t just good for basic patio installation and nothing more, many homeowners actually choose to get very creative with their tile placement to really inject a touch of personality into their gardens. To help you envision how tiles could transform your garden, let’s run through a few popular ideas.

Patio Area

Of course, the most popular use for outdoor tiles is to create a stylish patio area for garden furniture or potted plants. The size of the patio you create really depends on your personal taste as well as the dimensions of your garden.

Some homeowners wish to preserve as much of their garden’s natural environment as possible, so choose to only lay a small area of tiles in one section. Others who prefer a more low-maintenance outdoor space may opt for a full tile coverage with no grass at all.

Decorative Walls

Outdoor tiles can also be stylishly installed as part of a wall design. Patterned tiles are a common choice for this as they create an eye-catching feature piece for your garden with no heavy foot traffic to affect the decorative design.

Fire Pit/BBQ Area

Perfect for relaxing outside even on chiller nights, firepits make a fantastic addition to modern gardens. Outdoor tiles such as porcelain are very durable and resist well against the high levels of heat that firepits generate.

They are superb for creating a clean, stylish finish around the edge of the pit whilst acting as a sturdy base for garden furniture. For those who love grilling burgers in the summer, porcelain tiles can also be used to construct an attractive and functional BBQ area.

Outdoor Pool

If you are lucky enough to have your own outdoor pool or hot tub, ceramic and natural stone tiles are practical for use around these areas as they offer great water resistance and won’t get too slippery. Slip resistance is a key factor to consider in very wet areas so make sure the tile you choose is safe for use.

Planters

With their sleek finish and great durability, smaller outdoor tiles can also be used to build stylish planters. Choose coloured mosaic tiles to create a beautiful Moroccan-style pot or opt for a clean grey finish to perfectly complement a modern garden.

Considering Weather Conditions

The weather can be very unpredictable, especially if you live in the UK. As your outdoor tiles are obviously installed externally, they will be constantly exposed to many types of weathering all year round. Although all our outdoor tiles are manufactured for exterior use, there are varying levels of durability to choose from depending on the type of climate your garden experiences.

For example, granite tiles are extremely hard-wearing and weather-resistant so make a great choice for areas where drastic shifts in weather are common. Marble tiles are also very durable but can be more porous, so typically require sealing in order to resist very harsh conditions. Materials such as limestone and travertine are soft and porous so after sealing, are better suited to warmer areas with less stormy and wintery conditions.

Working with Sunlight

If you are considering tiling a specific section of your outdoor space, take the time to evaluate how much sunlight that part of the garden is exposed to on a regular basis. In general, darker tiles can make an already shaded area feel much gloomier. On the opposite end of the scale, bright white tiles sometimes give garden spots under heavy sunlight a very washed-out appearance.

It’s all about striking a good balance. If you are looking for a way to brighten a dank, shaded patio, opt for lighter shades. Similarly, to avoid overexposure, try out darker shades in parts of the garden with consistent amounts of bright natural light.

What Style is Your Home/Garden?

After considering placement and functionality, it is now onto the fun part: style. Of course, a huge decider in which kind of tile you go for will be in its visual appearance. Use your creative freedom to style your tiles in a way that magnifies your personal taste whilst still coordinating well with your surroundings.

Ask yourself, do I want to create a striking feature piece that stands out? Or would I rather my patio area blend into the natural environment of my garden? If bold and out-there is your vision, why not go for a gorgeous decorative mosaic tile or deep and dark contemporary tile to really catch the eye? For something a little more subtle, utilise the neutral tones of natural stone to match the organic aesthetics in the surrounding area.

Also, consider the tone throughout the rest of your garden. If you’ve incorporated a lot of contemporary features such as a steel fire pit, minimalist planters, and modern garden furniture, a stunning grey slate would emulate a sleek look whilst still adding a natural touch.

Consider your property itself in the same way. Clean lines and cool tones may look a little out of place next to a very traditional property, however, rustic porcelain may be just the right fit for a classic aesthetic.
