One of the most common designs of toilets, closed coupled toilets come with a cistern attached to the bowl. This single, streamlined unit is incredibly versatile with all the essential components kept together making it an ideal choice for any size, shape and style of bathroom.

Because they are compact by design, pipework also can very easily be hidden in their casings – perfect when you have to fit a toilet in a small or otherwise awkward position. Something else working in their favour is how simple they can be to install. As opposed to wall-hung or back-to-wall toilets which sometimes require additional access, close-coupled toilets can be installed in any suitable location where the pipework has been plumbed in. Naturally, this means they are the most convenient to replace down the line.

Keep in mind that these toilets will always be taller than either back-to-wall or wall-hung models, so it’s important to measure your space before installing. A depth of 60 – 68cm is typically what you’ll need but take care to double-check each individual toilet for more precise measurements.

When thinking about what toilet you want, don’t forget to give proper consideration to the flush. Both lever and push buttons are equally effective and can provide nice finishes, but typically, dual flushes will offer both 3 and 6-litre flush options to help you conserve water. If you expect the toilet to see regular use (in an ensuite for example) these tend to be the more popular choice.

For those looking for an easy-to-clean and more hygienic toilet, many close-coupled designs also feature rimless bowls. Unlike traditional designs which can trap bacteria, a rimless bowl ensures that no spot is missed during a flush. It also makes them far easier to reach with a cloth or bleach when cleaning.

Benefits of Closed Coupled Toilets:

  • Durable & long-lasting
  • Suits most styles of bathroom
  • Easy to install
  • Cost-effective replacement for older toilets
  • Easy-clean rimless models available
