Lighting up Your Home in Style

Which Type of Lighting?

Internal lighting can be used in many different ways to create any look you want for your space. Ambient lighting fixtures such as ceiling lights are ideal for enhancing visibility across an entire room from just a single practical lighting point.

Accent lighting on the other hand will stylishly illuminate a particular area or object such as kitchen cupboards, fireplaces, TVs, mirrors, and other ornaments to add stunning depth and set the tone of your space.

For enhanced functionality whilst carrying out your day-to-day lifestyle, spotlights and pendant lights can be installed over a kitchen worktop surface, for example, to provide clearer visibility when preparing food. Think carefully about what you actually need your internal lights for then relate that to which type of light may be most practical.

Considering the Space

Lighting is used differently all throughout the home. For example, bright ambient lighting is often used in bathrooms and kitchens to open up the space and ensure optimum visibility in everyday life. In more relaxed and social areas of the house such as the dining and living room, accent and mood lighting is installed to create a less intense and more calming atmosphere. Other spaces such as the bedroom or home office will typically incorporate ambient and stylised lights to create a balance of aesthetics and practicality.

Working with Aesthetics

With clever use of lighting, you can completely transform your space's entire look and finish. By simply adding LED striplights around a set of boring cupboards, for example, you can instantly inject a touch of contemporary elegance into even the dullest-looking of spaces.

The existing fixtures themselves also contribute stylishly to the aesthetics of a home. When browsing our selection, consider the existing design scheme you are working with. Are you working with a modern space filled with neutral tones and clean-cut features? Or are you looking for something a little more rustic and traditional to match a classic finish?

Picking the Perfect Bulbs

Cap Type/Fitting

When picking out a bulb, it’s crucial to ensure you choose the correct fitting/cap type. If chosen incorrectly, the bulb will not fit into the light fitting. Three of the most common cap and base types include bayonets, screws and pins or pegs.

Caps and bases are typically labelled using letters and numbers – the letter indicates the base type, whilst the number tells you the diameter in mm. A third letter may also be included to display how many pins the base has.

Which Type?

As well as cap type, there are also different kinds of light bulbs. The three main types of light bulbs include CFL, halogen and LED. Each bulb offers its own properties and advantages, so take the time to evaluate which may be the right fit for your home.

Brightness & Colour

Different light bulbs offer varying levels of brightness and colour. The ‘brightness’ of a bulb will be measured in watts or lumens, depending on whether you are dealing with energy-saving bulbs or incandescent. The higher this measurement, the brighter light the lightbulb will produce.

The colour of the lightbulb is measured on the Kelvin scale, although this is actually a measurement of temperature. This is important to bear in mind, as some manufacturers may refer to this as the ‘colour temperature’.

Bulbs may also be given a CRI Score which stands for Colour Rendering Index. This is a measurement of how well the light can depict different colours. In basic terms, it tells you how red the colour red will look in real life underneath the bulb’s light.

Choosing a Shape

There is also a multitude of different bulb shapes to choose from too. Common bulb shapes include the candle, golf ball, striplight, tube, globe, reflector, capsule, and a variety of others.

The shape of the bulb you pick significantly impacts the amount of light coverage that is generated. Bear this in mind when considering which type of lighting effect you want to create. Also, think about how the bulb will look in relation to the fixture – you don’t want to pick a bulb that looks far too big and out of place.
