Paint Brushes 101

Any professional decorator will tell you that in order to achieve the best possible paint finish, you must make sure that your paint brushes are fit for application. To help you pick the right tool for the job, let’s discuss the key factors you should consider when ordering.

Match Your Bristle Type to Your Paint Type

Within our range, we stock both synthetic and natural bristle brushes. The type of bristle you go should be based on the type of paint you are working with.

If you are planning to apply water-based paint that can be cleaned using water, we recommend choosing a brush with synthetic bristles. Synthetic brushes don’t draw out moisture so are easier to apply without leaving behind unsightly brush marks. For oil-based paints and varnishes, natural bristles are typically the best option for a smooth, streak-free finish.

Choosing the Perfect Size

When talking about ‘size’ we are discussing both the width and length of the brush itself as well as the thickness of the bristles. The right paint brush should be large enough to cover the surface area efficiently yet narrow enough to ensure careful control throughout the application.

A smaller paint brush, around 1 to 1.5 inches wide is perfect for most woodwork jobs and trim work. For trims wider than 3 inches, a wider brush width of 2 to 2.5 inches is generally a practical size for DIYers, with a 2.5 inch brush ideal for cutting in. Large, flat surfaces like walls and ceilings can be covered quickly and smoothly with paint brushes ranging anywhere from 3 up to 5 inches in size.

What About Brush Shape?

Did you know that paintbrushes also come in a fantastic variety of shapes too? Browsing our collection, you’ll find that some brushes incorporate angled bristles whilst others are cut to square ends.

Angled brushes are fantastic for cutting in along edges and achieving perfect, straight lines. If you are looking for a really crisp, precise line a thin angled brush will give you the most concentrated control. Square-tipped brushes are better suited to large, flat areas to get the job done quickly and easily.

Best Standard Brushes to Start Your Set

With a wealth of brush types, sizes, shapes and brands available, it can be a little confusing figuring out which paint brushes you’ll actually need.

If you are just starting out and need a simple yet practical all-rounder selection, opting for a high-quality, multi-brush set will give you a range of brushes to choose from all in one kit. There are a variety of pack sizes available with various sizes, shapes and bristle types, so simply pick the set that suits your home decorating needs.

If you’d prefer to choose your brushes individually, we recommend taking a look at the following:

  • ¾”/ 1” angled brush – For intricate detailing & windows.
  • 1” brush – For door frames, stairway spindles & small areas/edges.
  • 1 ½” brush – For skirting boards & larger door frames .
  • 2” brush – For cupboard doors/furniture.
  • 2 ½” brush – For panelled doors, larger furniture & cutting in.
  • 3” – 5” brush – For large surfaces such as walls, ceilings, floors & garage doors.
