Pipe Coupling

A pipe coupling simply connects two other pipe lengths. There are numerous ways this can be achieved. The coupling may come with a valve (one of the most popular ways nowadays) or it may require joining or welding. They can also be used as an effective reduction to decrease flow at a certain point in your pipe network. Many of them are demountable, with the vast majority also suitable for use in systems that provide drinking water.

Coupling pieces can be made from a number of materials, but the two most common are brass and polypropylene. Different couplings will come in different sizes, and rarely can two different materials be matched to create a consistent network. Try to keep these systems consistent – if the rest of your pipework includes polypropylene for example, then it is recommended that you use a coupling that has been made from the same plastic.

Couplings can be applied with relative ease, though because of their prominence throughout plumbing systems, we recommend that an expert be contacted should you require assistance in installing a coupling. Pipe networks should always be devoid of water before any work takes place, or else risk flooding, pooling, and other serious issues that may damage your pipework as well as your home.
