Types of Indoor Lighting
Not all lights are utilised for the same purpose. Some are used to set the tone and style of a space while others are installed simply to increase visibility. To help you pinpoint which kind of light you’re looking for, it’s best to understand the three main types of lighting:
Ambient Lighting
Also referred to as “general lighting”, ambient lights typically provide coverage for the entire room. A great place to use ambient lighting is for your bathroom lights, utilising your bathroom ceiling lights to create an envelope of soft light adds to the warmth of the room. These lights are used to increase illumination for a whole area rather than focusing on one small space. Ceiling lights for the living room are most commonly installed to create ambient lighting.
Task Lighting
As the name suggests, task lighting is used to carry out a specific function within a space. It is typically installed alongside general ambient lighting to focus an extra level of illumination on one particular space. An example of task lighting could be a pendant light hanging over a dining table to brighten the dining space or kitchen lights integrated underneath a cabinet for better visibility whilst preparing food.
Accent Lighting
Accent lighting is used to highlight a specific feature point and set a particular tone or mood within a room, spot lights are ideal for this. For example, lights may be installed around cupboards, above a painting or even behind a tv to focus the illumination subtly on that one area. Kitchen wall lights and bathroom wall lights are commonly used in this way. This focused lighting helps to enhance the depth and aesthetics of your home, whilst giving you the freedom to create a unique lighting look that perfectly matches your design scheme.
Sizing & Placement
Within our range, you’ll find a wide selection of light sizes to accommodate every kind of space. When picking out a particular light, it is important to consider the sizing of the fixture so as to not overpower or disrupt the flow of the room. You can even choose a unique style for your light switches.
A key factor to consider for ceiling and pendant lights is hanging length, important when deciding on kitchen ceiling lights and bedroom lights. You will need to approximate a practical and stylish level of hanging for your fixture that relates to the type and layout of the room.
Will your light fixture sit over a table? Will there be consistent traffic of people walking underneath? Is there a risk of the light obstructing other areas of the room? Make sure where you place your light feature leaves enough space to move freely around the area while generating enough light.
Creating a Stylised Aesthetic
Just as lighting creates a specific look, so can the actual light fixture itself. Within our vast collection, we stock light designs to suit every kind of style.
Love the stylish minimalism of modern design? Consider LED lights for the bedroom. LED strip lights are an incredibly popular lighting choice in modern homes, installed everywhere from kitchens and bathrooms and looking great in the bedroom.
For traditional homes where character is key, enjoy a timeless classic look with an intricate chandelier, beautifully finished in a sleek gold or bronze finish for that extra touch of luxury. Or, produce a more country cottage design with lantern-style wall lights and an elegantly rounded ceiling fixture.
Retro and vintage design is also hugely on-trend at the moment, with more and more homeowners going back in time to bring their home design into the now. Utilise large warm-lit light bulbs and accessories with a rustic faded finish to create a ‘shabby chic’ look for your dining room lights or living room lights.
Consider your outdoor garden space as well, there’s no reason this can’t be included in your lighting aesthetic. Outdoor lights bring the garden to life, especially in the dark winter months and this outdoor space is also a perfect area to douse in the harsh beams of a deterring security light, should you so choose.
