Your Guide to Kitchen Carcasses

Carcasses are the skeleton of your kitchen cabinets. It Is the carcass that your drawers will be placed into and doors will be hung onto. You could, therefore, argue that the quality of your carcass is the most important aspect of your new kitchen.

Types of Kitchen Carcasses

At DIY Megastore, we offer a complete range of carcasses in both flat pack and rigid form. From base carcasses in convenient widths to larder carcasses with full-height storage, you’ll be able to create your dream kitchen with minimal fuss.

Whilst our guide to kitchen terminology explores the role of each carcass in detail, here’s a brief overview of where each will be used in your kitchen. Understanding the types of carcasses available and where they’ll sit in your kitchen will make planning easier and installation headache-free.

Base

Installed at floor level, these carcasses provide easy to access storage and support for your worktop. Usually, they are available in width of between 300mm – 1000mm.

Wall

Often referred to as “upper carcasses”, these are mounted to the wall to make use of all available space in your kitchen. Again, these are usually available in widths of between 300mm – 1000mm.

Corner

Used when two base cabinets come together at an internal corner, a portion of these carcasses is hidden and doesn’t feature a door. They are typically available in widths of 800mm or 1000mm.

Larder

Sometimes referred to as “pantry carcasses”, these are fitted at ground level but extend to the top of your wall cabinets for maximum storage. You’ll often have a choice of widths between 300mm – 600mm.

Appliance

Providing a home for ovens, microwaves, hobs, and fridge freezers; these carcasses are standard sizes to ensure they suit the dimensions of most kitchen appliances.

Rigid vs Flat Pack Kitchen Carcasses

Most of our carcasses are available in a choice of rigid or flatpack form. Whilst rigid kitchen carcasses are great for DIYers who require a speedy installation, flat pack carcasses take up less space if being stored beforehand.

If you’re unsure which type of carcass is right for you, then here are a few questions to ask yourself.

1. Will you be storing your carcasses for several days or weeks before fitting? If yes, then flat pack carcasses are a great option as they take up less room. 

2. Will you be building the carcasses yourself? If yes, then rigid carcasses will be easier and quicker with less tools required. 

3. Do you have restricted access to your kitchen? If yes, then flat pack carcasses will be best as they’ll be built once in your kitchen.
