Interior Design Colours Trends of 2024:
What Are Homeowners Searching For?

You can change the entire feeling of a room by giving it a new lick of paint. But what colour to choose? Colour and fashion trends are changing constantly, with this article we aim to give you a head start on the colour trends coming in 2024.

All the weird and wonderful colour combinations for your home and the reasons we recommend them, await you below.

We’ve crunched the numbers and looked at the data, and hopefully we’ll give you some inspiration for your next decoration project.

So, what have we discovered? Read on, to find out the most exciting household colour trends for 2024.

Shades Set to Pop in 2024

Paint colour trends for 2024 will be focused on uplifting tones, taking a shift into more nature inspired colours, greens, reds and somewhat unexpectantly pinks.

Pastel shades are coming back in for the new year, and bold, dark tones are out. When we look at the data in greater depth, greens are dominating the trends for the coming year, with olive and forest green rising in popularity and sage green still the most popular colour.

Subtle, soft shades of red and green will come to dominate the next year. Light reds and pinks have seen a big bump in searches, reinforcing the shift toward bright and airy colours. You may think of pink as a very bold and brash colour but there are many subdued hues that look fantastic, while not drawing too much attention to themselves.

That’s what’s coming in, but what’s going out? Almost across the board we’ve seen a drop in searches for bold, solid colours. Blue has lost out massively with every shade seeing decrease. Looking at the data we see that as well as a drop for dark blue tones, such as navy and hague blue, bolder green tones such as emerald green and red shades like dark and deep red are the big losers.

White and grey paint remain a popular choice, with white actually seeing a 25% increase in searches over the last year. Not exactly a trend but these neutral tones do provide a solid base on which to express your personal style.

Knowing the paint trends for the coming year is awesome, but what about specific areas of your home? We thought that we could concentrate on the kitchen and bathroom to give you a good idea of what’s on-trend for these often-overlooked spaces in your home.

Refine Your Colour Palette in the Kitchen for 2024

Colour Trends to Energise Your Kitchen in The New Year

The kitchen is the heart of your house; It’s where all of your food is prepared and for many, it’s the social hub of the home. It’s important to make your kitchen as inviting as possible, not only for your guests but for yourself, to make it a space you enjoy spending time in.

Because it’s a room you may not decorate often, deciding which colours to style the room around and getting it right first time is important.

Transform Your Kitchen with Some Delicious Decor

Expand culinary creativity into your decorative style, your home is an extension of you, after all.

Let’s discuss what’s out and what’s in. The good, the bad, and the neutral.

Our research shows that grey and white are out, with an across the board decrease in popularity. This could possibly be due to the move toward lighter, more colourful and playful tones for the kitchen.

For colours that have remained neutral we see that blue remains a safe, timeless choice. There is a blue shade fit for every occasion, although we have noticed that Hague and Navy blue are not as popular as they once were. It seems moody, dark blues have fallen out of style.

A colour staying relatively stable that we’ve noticed has a very healthy popularity is black. There has been a slight dip in popularity but otherwise, there a lot of people bringing black into the kitchen. As a complement to another colour, or to accent your room, black can be a great choice to bring out the details in your kitchen décor.

Where we’ve noticed a big increase is in the nature-tinged hues of green shades. Leaning into a green toned colour palette enhances the natural, calm feeling in your kitchen. We’re seeing a focus on Sage and Olive green for the coming year with a twenty percent increase in searches for these colours in particular.

It is well documented that green shades make us feel calmer, and this isn’t just woo woo wishful thinking. There are studies that show human eyes are most sensitive to the wavelengths of green colours. This is because it activates two or three types of colour receptor in our eyes. Both blue and red light waves are enhanced when green is present. To get scientific for a second, green light sits smack bang in the middle of the visible light spectrum, at 555 nanometres, where human perception is at its best.

There is also the heavy association we have with the colour green and nature, for obvious reasons. Because of all these factors, green helps to relieve stress and boost your mood so is an ideal shade for the kitchen, which at times can be a stressful environment due to juggling all of those dishes to make a sumptuous feast!

We’re also coming into a more environmentally conscious time in general. Bringing nature into the home is a good way to help us feel like we’re doing our bit for the environment. Think about adding plant life to further enhance the nature-inspired tones that will be popular in 2024.

Another area we have noticed a big increase is for the colour pink. Could this be the influence of the Barbie movie? Maybe, or just a general feeling that we want something a little more playful and vibrant in our lives. It could be anything really, but a shift toward brighter, more fun-loving colours is on the cards with pink seeing a 23% increase which is set to continue into the new year.

Whichever colour theme you opt for, it’s going to look great. And if you are able to match the colour aesthetic of your room by incorporating your furniture choices into it, it’ll really tie the room together, creating a cohesive, on—trend look for 2024.

A Full Menu of Colours for the Rest of the Kitchen

When it comes to kitchen furniture trends for the coming year, here are several distinct patterns we have noticed for cabinets, countertops and tiles.

White wins out for kitchen countertops by a country mile. When you think about it it’s obvious why. A kitchen has to be functional, and a white countertop is the best for showing up food stains. So we see that the stylistic element of countertops usually comes from the material it is made from.

By far the most popular choice is quartz, this material is great as it goes with pretty much any style. It creates a classic, timeless look that complements any colour.

And we see the same for kitchen islands and tiles as well, white is streets ahead in popularity for the same reasons countertops are usually white. Interestingly, a close second for kitchen tiles is green, further reinforcing the move toward a natural, calming focus for kitchens in 2024.

A part of the kitchen that can easily be incorporated into your new colour scheme are cabinet doors. Whether you are replacing them completely or giving them a fresh coat of paint, your cabinet doors should be a part of your new style.

And once again, green is the winner, with neutral grey tones also being very popular. The previous trend leaning toward forest green is moving into delicate sage tones. Given that sage is created by combining grey and green, this colour choice makes perfect sense as a trend for 2024.

Creative Colour Combinations

You don’t just need to stick to shades of one colour for your kitchen either. Discover which colour combinations are trending for 2024.

Looking at the data, black and white kitchen designs have the highest searches but are also in decline for the coming year, with 20% less people looking to make their kitchen focus on this classic style.

Blue and white, as well as grey and white are also popular and remain stable. Combinations of these neutral colours proving to be as timeless as ever. If you don’t opt for one of the bolder style options, you could always stick with a classic combination of colours such as these and still create a statement.

The rising stars in colour combinations for your kitchens in 2024 are black and brown kitchens and blue and pink. Searches for black and brown kitchens have increased by 85% from the previous year. This mix of colours seemingly leads to thoughts of quite a dark and moody space, with bold swathes of colour across kitchen walls and counters. Though with the addition of natural light and rich brown tones, this is a very warm and inviting combination.

On the polar opposite side of the spectrum, blue and pink has seen a surge in popularity. This combination need not be a brash, loud, neon explosion of bright colour…. Unless you want it to be! There are many pastel, subtle tones and shades available in both pink and blue hues. As discussed, this is indicative of a wider trend going into 2024 of sweet, dreamy colours and earthy, natural tones, celebrating life and the natural world.

Beautiful Bathroom Colour Trends in 2024

The Dazzling Bathroom Colour Trends

Every home has one (hopefully!) and for many it is probably a room you won’t think about much, unless something in it goes wrong, and then that’s usually a job for the friendly neighbourhood plumber.

But rather than a simple utilitarian space that provides an essential function in your home, a bathroom is also an opportunity to express your personal style. For a little bathroom inspiration for that vital renovation or decoration project going into the new year, here are the coming colour trends for 2024.

Bring a Wave of Trendy Colour Into Your Bathroom

Although blue is one of the most popular colours for bathrooms historically, there has been a huge drop in popularity over the last year. And it’s not just in the bathroom, blue seems to be falling out of popularity in every area of the home.

Darker tones such as matt black and grey are also seeing a decline but black overall remains a popular choice. Even though these might seem like an odd choice for a bathroom anyway, when combined with the silvers and gleaming whites of taps, cabinets and sanitaryware, it can look quite striking.

For 2024 there is a definite move away from this more bold and striking colour palette. Rich, sumptuous tones are taking a break to make way for a more subdued, lighter, playful set of colours with an emphasis on shades that invoke the feeling of being amongst nature.

With darker colours declining and this trend set to continue into 2024, what colours do we see taking their place?

Green is in ascendence; it has always been a popular choice, but we are seeing this especially for mint and olive green with a 50% increase in searches for mint green alone. In terms of tone, these two colours are opposite; mint green is a light, airy and bright colour whereas olive green comes in subdued and subtle shades. So, why these two in particular?

As we’ve seen in the kitchen and the general colour trends for 2024, capturing the colours of nature and bringing them into the home is the major trend we’re seeing. It is well-proven how good it is for people to be in the comforting embrace of nature and right now we need a bit of comfort.

In keeping with the lighter, subtle trend for kitchens and 2024 in general, we’re seeing an increase in popularity for neutral, light grey tones. This makes sense for a space such as the bathroom, neutral tones provide a good blank canvas for you to then express your personal style in other ways and add flourishes of colour that will really pop against the background.

Complete The Look with Splashes of 2024's Most Popular Colours

It doesn’t just have to be your walls that are on-trend for 2024. Many people use their cabinets, tiles and vanity units as a complement to the overall style of the room. And we see this reflected in the trends for these areas of the bathroom in the coming year.

Across all areas, neutral colours are still the most popular, these timeless colours will forever be synonymous with the bathroom. In terms of what we see rising in popularity, no surprise, but it’s green.

Stylistically, using tiles as a way to enhance and complement another colour is common. Tiling only half of the wall, usually from the floor to halfway up the wall, is a great way to add colour and also provide a wipe clean surface that is water-tight and resistant to moisture damage.

We see the same for cabinets and vanity units; green is the big colour for 2024. This looks especially effective in the bathroom where creating a tranquil, calming atmosphere is beneficial for a space that is used so often by every member of the house.

Creative Colour Combinations

As discussed, the bathroom is the perfect place to bring in a complementary duo of colours. And there are plenty of colours coming into popularity for the next year that might just prove to be ideal for your bathroom.

There is actually a huge increase in popularity for colour combinations in general. With more pastel, subdued shades becoming popular, there is more of an opportunity to bring together two colours that might even be classically described as clashing. It’s hard to use a bold colour with another colour, and not just a neutral tone, because that colour will be competing for attention, or one will simply overpower the other.

Many of the increases we see in popularity coming into the new year are a pink or green colour combined with a neutral tone, such as green and black. Our favourite has to be the combination of pink and green which is going strong with a 30% bump in popularity coming into 2024.

Bringing both natural green tones and dreamy pinks together in a bizarrely complementary pairing, this combination had its first major surge in popularity in the 1950’ and 60’s of the USA. A kitschy nostalgia blast with the benefit of modern sensibilities, recalling and referencing the style rather than leaning entirely into it, bringing a modern spin to a style from yesteryear.

Other colour combinations ascending in popularity include the ever ostentatious black and gold, white and gold and the “I need to put my house on the market” combination of beige and grey/black/white.

When it comes to picking a colour combination going into 2024, we recommend sticking with pastoral, subtle shades to stay on-trend for the year. Pink and green and pink and blue are the most interesting additions to next year’s trending bathroom colours.

Where Did We Get Our Juicy Data?

In the UK, we are surrounded by nature. The soft tones of nature, concentrating on greens and the playful, airy feeling of subdued pinks will play an integral part in the colour palette of next year. Bringing some of that nature into our homes in a big way in 2024.

But how can we be so sure what the trends for next year will be? No matter how good at our jobs we might be, even we can’t see into the future. So how did we reach our conclusions? With science!

Below is a table of our research and the data we used to give you a head start on the trends for next year.
