Decorative vs Traditional

From robust, sturdy panels designed for full security, to stylised decorative fencing perfect for eye-catching backdrops, fence panels are available in a multitude of different types. Before picking out the construction type of your new fencing, you’ll first need to decide what you actually want from your new fence.

Will your fencing be used to simply add seclusion and privacy to your garden? Or would you prefer a more unique and attractive finish to highlight features or flower beds? Do you want a basic classic fence throughout the entire space, or will you mix a blend of traditional and decorative styles?

Traditional fencing is typically used to construct a strong, durable, and secure boundary around the edge of your garden. Popular construction styles include the overlap, feather edge, picket and close board panels which are available in a variety of different sizes and materials to best suit the needs of your garden.

Whilst decorative fencing does add a degree of privacy, decorative construction types such as slatted and lattice panels focus more on the stylised finish and look of your garden. They are utilised to form an attractive frame for your outdoor area whilst beautifully enhancing focal points such as plant life and water features.

Different Fencing Construction Types

From the sturdily structured overlap and practical featheredge to the contemporary-styled slatted and elegant lattice, there are a fantastic array of fencing construction types out there to choose from. Each type offers its own distinct look, resilience levels and functional benefits for your outdoor space.

Traditional

Incorporating straight cut or waney edge overlapping horizontal boards, the overlap fence panel creates a natural yet protective finish that coordinates stylishly with any garden design. With a more open structure featuring spaced-out pales, the countryside cottage-style picket fence is a popular choice for front garden spaces. This traditional construction type creates a practical feeling of seclusion from the surrounding area whilst still beautifully showcasing the front of your property for great curb appeal.

For those who prefer a more sleek and heightened appearance, featheredge and close board panels combine overlapping vertical boards to form an ultra-stable full perimeter that brings total privacy and security to your garden.

Decorative

From the clean lines and smooth finishes of modern design to the eye-catching elegance of ageless aesthetics, decorative fencing will instantly upgrade and transform the appearance of your garden area.

Fantastic for contemporary spaces filled with minimalist features points and neutral tones, the tongue and groove fence combines high-strength panels with thick, flat interlocking boards. Not only does this fencing type completely seclude your garden from the rest of the outside world but it also produces a sleek, clean finish to elegantly frame the space.

The perfect match for natural and earthy environments hit-and-miss fencing generates a stunning textured pattern with vertical or horizontal boards fixed alternatively to the front and back of the battens. Blending practicality with style, hit-and-miss fences increase your garden’s privacy whilst offering fantastic wind resistance and sturdy reliability.

For modern environments, there’s no better choice than the slatted fence. Opt for a single-slatted design to generate a simplistic finish or add enhanced depth and interest with the stylish double-slatted structure. Ideal for breaking up large spaces and supporting the climbing plant life, trellis fencing is sold in an array of simplistic and elaborate patterned designs.

Working by Size

Fence panels are sold in a standard width of 6ft with a variety of heights available ranging from 3ft up to 6ft. So, which size is best for your garden? There are no set limitations on how high your panels can be, it is simply dependent on the functional requirements and visual finish you want for the new fence structure.

For example, 5ft and 6ft fence panels are ideal for bringing total privacy and security to your space. They are tall enough to prevent intrusions and shelter your garden from external view without towering too high and looking out place.

To achieve a softer boundary design with a more stylised appearance, a 4ft or 5ft fence with a trellis topper would strike just the right balance between seclusion and aesthetics. 3ft fences are more commonly installed across the front of the property, although can be stylishly installed to separate different sections of your back garden area too. For example, to protect your vegetable patch from trampling feet or to build a charming enclosure for small animals.
